Chen Li (Qing scholar)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chen Li ( Chinese  陳 澧 , Pinyin Chén Lǐ , 1810-1882) was a Chinese linguist and Confucian scholar of the Qing Dynasty . Among other things, he analyzed the Fanqie in the Chinese dictionary Guangyun . In doing so, he determined which initial and final characters represent the same sounds, thereby listing the initial and final sounds of the underlying system. The same was repeated in the 20th century by the Swede Bernhard Karlgren (1889–1978), who used it to reconstruct Middle Chinese . At the time, however, Karlgren had no idea about Chen Li's work.
