Chesapeake Energy is a US petroleum company that produces oil and gas in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming. The company is headquartered in Oklahoma City , the capital of the state of Oklahoma , and produced an average daily oil and gas volume of around 320,000 boe in fiscal year 2018 . Chesapeake Energy is one of the largest natural gas producers in the United States and is recognized as a pioneer in the production of shale gas using hydraulic fracturing ("fracking"). According to the Fortune 500 list, Chesapeake Energy is one of the top 500 companies in terms of sales in the United States.

Due to a drop in the price of oil and gas, Chesapeake Energy's share price fell from over 18 euros in 2015 to around 50 cents in 2019. Associated liquidity problems sparked rumors of an impending bankruptcy application and necessary restructuring.

On June 28, 2020, Chesapeake Energy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy . The company reported a loss of $ 8.3 billion in the first quarter of 2020 and $ 9.4 billion in long-term debt.
