Chesslete

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chesslete is a carnival custom from Solothurn , in which the winter is to be driven away with noise instruments such as bells or ratchets . He has been known for about 135 years.

On a dirty Thursday shortly before 5:00 a.m., the Chesslers meet on Friedhofplatz in a white nightgown with a pointed hat and a red scarf , which is often decorated with traditional patterns. The noise instruments may only be put into operation on the sign of Oberchessler at 5:00 a.m. Before that, the city is absolutely quiet. After the Chesslete, at around 6:00 a.m., flour soup is served free of charge in numerous bars in the city .

The Chesslete is also available in other parts of the canton of Solothurn , in the city of Zug and in the Laufental . In the Schwarzbubenland it is sometimes also called Morgenstreich , after the Basel Carnival of the same name . A similar custom exists in the Swabian-Alemannic carnival ; there it is called the shirt bell procession .
