As Hemdglunker or Hemdglonker , participants designate a Hemdglunker-move (also Hemdglunki -Move), which in many places of the carnival is. The shirt glunkers in white nightgowns and hats pull through the place and make a noise z. B. with bells, bells and old pot lids. The move takes place in the week before Ash Wednesday ; in the Swabian-Alemannic carnival mostly in the evening or early morning of Schmotzigen Dunschtig . On this day there is a similar custom at the Solothurn Carnival : the Chesslete . And also in the Upper Bavarian village of "Hemadlenzen" a parade in white nightgowns is organized on the nonsensical Thursday.

Alemannic roots

Glunke is a "dangling, hanging curl" in Middle High German. This resulted in glunken or glonken in the sense of swaying or hanging around. The term Glonker, a loafers, was derived from this. The word glunker comes from Alemannic and means something like rotten, scruffy. The speech of the Shirt Glonk King in Constance is given in dialect.

Made in Constance

According to legend, boys from the Stephansschule boarding school in Konstanz also wanted to celebrate Carnival in the 19th century. They climbed over the school walls in their white nightgowns and mingled with the fool folk. The shirt-bell procession was first mentioned in Konstanz in 1879, when at Fasnet, students dressed in white with white pointed hats, carrying torches and noisy, marched in front of the apartments of their professors in order to confront them with their quirkiness and casualness. The Glonker parades originated in Konstanz and then spread in the Swabian-Alemannic area:

“Shirt bell parades are widespread in the Swabian-Alemannic carnival landscape all the way up into the Black Forest, but their origin was in Constance. It was mainly teachers who carried the shirt dressing habit from here to the villages and towns in the wide area. "

- Herbert Hofmann, former student at the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium in Konstanz

Shirt glonkers were mentioned in the Konstanzer Zeitung on February 21, 1882, the Shirt Glonker parade in the Konstanzer Zeitung on February 19, 1887 and the chariot of the Shirt Glonker King in the parade of 1904 in a letter from the former student Leo Braun. In the years 1915–1920 (effects of the First World War) and 1940–1947 (effects of the Second World War) the moves were canceled. Since 1948 - with one exception during the 2nd Gulf War in 1991 - they have taken place annually.

Regional and local peculiarities

In some cases, the shirt glon king and queen are also elected.
