Karl Moll (born October 13, 1884 in Meersburg ; † December 2, 1936 ) was a German local politician and mayor of Meersburg on Lake Constance.

Studies and military service

Karl Moll was the son of the deaf and dumb teacher Otto Moll and was born in the former Hofkanzlerhaus in Meersburg. After graduating from high school in Konstanz in 1905 and military service in Munich, he studied economics (including finance and constitutional law) in Berlin and Strasbourg and received his doctorate in 1910. He was employed by the Bund Deutscher Verkehrsvereine, traveled to European countries and became a foot artillery when the First World War broke out -Regiment 14 drafted into Strasbourg. He was a captain of the German Army and a soldier in World War I and received several military awards, including the Knight's Cross 2nd Class of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen . He resigned from military service on January 11, 1919.

Mayor of Meersburg

Karl Moll was Mayor of Meersburg from 1919 until his death in 1936. With his knowledge of Meersburg conditions and European tourism, he contributed significantly to the development of Meersburg, especially to the development of tourism . In 1919 he introduced the visitor's tax and the municipal gazette he wrote and edited himself. During his tenure, Meersburg's infrastructure was decisively expanded through electrification, water pipeline construction, drainage, road construction, lake facilities on replenishment land and lido construction. In 1928 he campaigned for the city of Konstanz to build the ferry port on the northern shore of the lake in Meersburg. The Konstanz – Meersburg car ferry and the continuation of the federal highway 33 between Meersburg north and Konstanz south shores of Lake Constance were made possible. Karl Moll campaigned for the preservation of the Meersburg traditional costumes with the filigree traditional hood. In the early days of the National Socialist era, he retained his independence despite party membership. He belonged to the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its surroundings and was in charge of the management ("caretaker") in Meersburg.

Commemoration

In honor of his services to tourism, a green area with a vantage point on Bundesstrasse 33 above the lower town gate was named "Dr.-Moll-Platz". A memorial stone reminds of his work for the development of Meersburg.
