Chidamāt-i Ittilā'āt-i Dawlati

Chidamāt-i Ittilāʿāt-i Dawlati ( Persian خدمات اطلاعات دولتی- State Intelligence Service ), also known by the acronym KhAD (from Khidamāt-i Ittilāʿāt-i Dawlati ) based on the English transcription , was the Afghan secret service under the Soviet-backed government. It was founded in 1980. The KhAD was originally under the leadership of Mohammed Najibullah , who became President of Afghanistan in 1986 .

Today's Afghan secret service, the National Security Directorate , is also known colloquially in Afghanistan as KhAD.
