Surgical Exploration

A surgical exploration means to investigate there is evidence of (sufficiently severe) disease emergency basis the suspected area directly, by passing it through skin incision and dissection to expose the covering layers and thereby directly by inspection (View) or palpation (touching) is examined. The term thus contradicts the other meaning of the word exploration in medicine.

Surgical exploration is particularly useful in emergency situations, e.g. B. at

• Acute abdomen
• acute scrotum
• internal bleeding

In individual cases, risks and benefits usually have to be decided very quickly. In particular, it should be considered before the operation whether the clarification is also possible through less invasive examinations, e.g. B. by endoscopy or computed tomography .
