Choral Synagogue (Brest)
The Choral Synagogue in Brest , a Belarusian city in Breszkaya Woblasz , was built in the 1850s.
history
In 1842 the old synagogue was demolished in order to build the Brest fortress . The Jewish community received financial compensation for the building, and the new synagogue was built with this money. The construction of the octagonal synagogue took eleven years. In 1865 the synagogue was damaged by fire, but it was quickly rebuilt.
During the German occupation, the synagogue was at the entrance to the ghetto . Inside it was a warehouse for things that the Germans had confiscated. The synagogue was partially destroyed in autumn 1942 when the Brest ghetto was dissolved. Before 1941, the proportion of the Jewish population in Brest was very high. The majority of the Jewish population was murdered by the German occupiers during the Holocaust .
In 1959 the synagogue was taken away from the Jewish community and turned into a cinema called Oktober , which is now called Belarus . The building was clad in glass around 1976.
