The Great Synagogue in Stolin , a Belarusian town in Breszkaya Woblasz , was built at the end of the 18th century. Today it stands empty and is in ruins.

history

The synagogue was built from 1790 to 1793. In 1827 the building was badly damaged in a fire and then rebuilt. Presumably in the 1920s, renovations were carried out and the walls painted. These paintings are no longer preserved. After the murder of the Jewish population in World War II , it was used as a grain store after the war. It has been empty and decayed since the 1980s. Today only the outer walls remain.

architecture

The brick building in the classical style was originally plastered and decorated with pilasters , but most of the plaster has now fallen off. It is a rectangular building, with the east side protruding somewhat in the middle and the corners being flattened. There are large windows on two outer levels. The main hall (the men's prayer room) can be reached through a vestibule to the west, above which was the women's prayer room. These are an integral part of the original building. Presumably in the 1920s, more balconies for the women were added to the north and south sides.

The main hall was divided into a central nave and two side aisles by columns . The central nave probably had a barrel vault , while the aisles had flat ceilings.

Bima and Torah shrine are no longer preserved.
