Stolin ( Belarusian Столін ; Russian Столин ; Polish Stolin ) is a city in the Brest Oblast in Belarus in the Breszkaja Woblasz ; it is the administrative seat of the Rajon Stolin . In 2012 it had 12,353 inhabitants.
geography
Stolin, 15 kilometers from the southern border with Ukraine , is located in the heart of the Polesian countryside on the banks of the Horyn River , at the intersection of two important road connections, to Pinsk in the northwest (50 kilometers away) and Turau in the east. Brest is 219 km to the west.
history
Recent archaeological findings suggest that the area of today's Stolin was inhabited since the 12th century. The first mention of Stolin comes from 1555.
As in 1986 in the 230 kilometers from Chernobyl the local nuclear reactor out of control became even Stolin was affected: the city was right in the drawing direction of the radioactive cloud . The consequences were and are rising cancer rates , an increase in other diseases, and the establishment of restricted areas , some of which still exist more than 25 years later.
