Chromating ( inchromizing ) is a manufacturing process to increase the corrosion resistance of metallic components. This is a thermochemical diffusion treatment of the workpiece edge zone. At temperatures between 1000 and 1200 ° C , chromium diffuses into unalloyed steels around 10 µm-20 µm, in low-alloy steels more than 100 µm and in nickel materials 25 µm-75 µm in the surface layer and enriches it up to 35% chromium. With an increased carbon content in the steel, a chromium carbide layer forms, which forms a zone of difficult diffusion. The resulting very hard surface remains resistant to scaling up to 800 ° C. It is used for components that are exposed to high temperatures and an aggressive environment, such as turbine blades .
