Chronicon Scotorum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chronicon Scotorum is a copy of medieval annals made by the Sligo historian Dubhaltach Mac Fhirbhisigh between 1640 and 1650 , the original of which has no longer been preserved. They are largely written in Irish with some Latin entries. The chronicle begins with a short narrative part for the time before Patrick and covers the periods from 353 to 722, 804 to 1135 and 1141 to 1149 with regular entries.

History of origin

According to Kathleen Hughes' analysis , the Chronicon Scotorum is largely a copy of the Tigernach annals . Their assumption is based on the fact that the additions to the Annals of Tigernach in comparison to the Annals of Ulster, especially for entries relating to Clonmacnoise , can largely be found in the Chronicon Scotorum. The few entries that are listed in the Chronicon Scotorum and are missing in the Annals of Tigernach suggest, in the opinion of Kathleen Hughes, the assumption that the traditional form of the Annals of Tigernach was not used as a template, but an older one that is no longer available standing version. The description of the Battle of Lethirbe in 630 is one of these entries, which have not been handed down in such detail anywhere else.

The last entries from the years 1141 to 1149 were only added to the other annals in the edition published by Hennessy in 1866, apparently because they also come from the hand of Dubhaltach Mac Fir-Bhisigh. The origin of the content is not known in detail.

Preserved manuscripts

The manuscript produced by Dubhaltach Mac Fhirbhisigh is in the library of Trinity College in Dublin . It covers the period up to 1135. There are some later handwritten copies of it, but they do not add anything in terms of content.
