Cielito lindo is a popular Mexican folk song that has the status of a “second national anthem ”. It was written in 1882 by Quirino Fidelino Mendoza y Cortés (1862–1957).

meaning

Cielito is the diminutive of the word cielo (heaven). The addition of the suffix it is common in Mexico; For example cervezita ( little beer) instead of cerveza (beer) or - as in this song - ojitos (little eyes) instead of ojos (eyes). Cielito therefore means little heaven , but in this specific case it is more of a person who is very close to you and therefore means something like darling or treasure . Lindo means beautiful or cute . Literally translated it means beautiful heaven , but figuratively it means my darling .

text

Although there are more detailed text versions, depending on the artist, the basic form of the song consists of the following stanzas, which in this version were also recorded by Trini Lopez :

Spanish German translation

De la Sierra Morena ,
Cielito lindo, vienen bajando,
Un par de ojitos negros,
Cielito lindo, de contrabando.

Ay, ay, ay, ay,
Canta y no llores,
Porque cantando se alegran,
Cielito lindo, los corazones.

Ese lunar que tienes,
Cielito lindo, junto a la boca,
No se lo des a nadie,
Cielito lindo, que a mi me toca.

From the Sierra Morena ,
beautiful sky, they come down,
a pair of black eyes,
beautiful sky, as contraband.

Ay, ay, ay, ay,
Sing and don't cry,
Because singing delights,
beautiful heaven, hearts.

Your beauty spot,
beautiful sky, close to your mouth,
don't give it to anyone,
beautiful sky, because it should only belong to me.
