Citizen Developer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A citizen developer is an end user who creates new applications , programs or systems using development environments made available to him by corporate IT. But generally speaking, a citizen developer is not a professional programmer, but a user who has the technical understanding to solve the requirements placed on him.

This is not a professional programmer, but a layperson who, with the knowledge he has acquired, is able to create business applications himself. Central IT should always be included in the development process for support, especially when it comes to difficult challenges such as security or the development of mobile applications. It is advisable to work with declarative tools , such as low-code platforms , because these make it possible to create application solutions with comparatively little technical understanding and without great programming skills.

opportunities

  • In theory, new capacities can be tapped, because the support and coaching of citizen developers creates the opportunity to promote new specialists with relatively little effort.
  • Surveys by Unisphere Research and Kintone indicate that Citizen Developers build some or all of their applications outside of normal IT management .
  • Citizen developers can play an important role in digital transformation , as people with little or no IT knowledge are enabled to create applications.

Risks

  • Promotion of shadow IT , since the software created was not developed by a specialist and the software can be of poor quality.
  • The integration of applications is usually a great challenge and can usually not be solved by Citizen Developers themselves, but only with the help of a company's central IT.
