Ciudad Caribia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ciudad Caribia is a city in Venezuela . It was planned in 2006 as the country's first socialist city . Construction began in 2007 and the first apartments were occupied in 2011 and in 2019 the city had around 10,000 inhabitants.

Since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2015, the unfinished Ciudad has been left to decay, although it is inhabited.

Infrastructure

Currently, 800 of the 20,000 planned apartments have been built. In Ciudad Caribia there are schools, childcare, local health care, a hairdresser, a cooperative bakery and several supermarkets. The crime rate is extremely low and the residents living there report the lack of hierarchy in the city. So far, US $ 674 million has been invested in the project. The apartments are being built by a Cuban-Venezuelan joint venture company as part of the ALBA .

target

The aim of the project is to build a modern socialist city with good infrastructure and at the same time to alleviate the housing shortage in Venezuela. The construction of the city has created 2,000 jobs so far. However, the originally set goal of 100,000 inhabitants in 20,000 apartments was not achieved.

criticism

It has been criticized that construction is proceeding far too slowly. In addition, it was largely improvised and the quality of the buildings leaves a lot to be desired. Due to a lack of jobs, the city has largely developed into a dormitory city ( ciudad dormitorio ) and there are problems with the medical and water supply.
