Ciuto Brandini
Ciuto Brandini († 1345 ) was a labor leader in Florence who was executed there in 1345.
background
The wool workers in the Florentine cloth industry were not represented in their own guild and could therefore do little to oppose the owners of the workshops for which they had to work and on which they were dependent. Since the 1340s it can be proven for Florence that the Florentine wool workers actively claimed the establishment of their own guild and advocated it with agitation.
As early as 1343, the smaller craftsmen and owners of smaller shops fought for participation in the city government. This was denied to the wool workers until the Ciompi uprising and could only be defended here for a few weeks.
The execution of Ciuto Brandini must be placed in this context.
