Civil Liberties Union for Europe

The Civil Liberties Union for Europe is the European offshoot of the Civil Liberties Union (Liberties for short), an NGO (non-governmental organization) that has set itself the task of promoting the "civil liberties" of people in the European Union (EU ) to maintain or expand.

The headquarters of Civil Liberties for Europe is in Berlin, but there is still a strong network with Brussels. It is based on a number of national NGOs in Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Spain. But the official recognition according to German law did not take place until 2017.

The organization is registered in the EU Transparency Register and thus engages in lobbying .

According to their own statements, three goals are proclaimed:

  1. The EU should recognize freedoms , especially with regard to new laws or regulations .
  2. The EU should intervene in the event that individual members violate international obligations or civil liberties.
  3. It is important to sensitize the population to their freedom rights.

implementation

Campaigns in the areas of education and public awareness are carried out to implement the goals . Specifically, articles are published or videos are produced that explain at a simple level what civil liberties are and what the EU and national governments are doing to protect them.

In addition, the Civil Liberties Union for Europe provides legal advice for the individual NGOs and arranges contacts with influential politicians .
