Clapham South is a London Underground station in the London Borough of Lambeth . It is located on the border of the Travelcard tariff zones 2 and 3. At the station building at the southern end of the Clapham Common park , the main streets of Balham Hill and Nightingale Lane cross. In 2013, 7.58 million passengers used this station served by Northern Line trains.

The station opened on September 13, 1926, as part of the extension from Clapham Common to Morden . Balham North and Nightingale Lane were also discussed as possible station names . Designed by Charles Holden , the station is a modernist style building made of Portland stone . The tiles on the platforms and in the access tunnels have been preserved in their original state. The building has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1987 . In the mid-1930s, Westbury Court was built above the entrance .

Clapham South is one of eight London Underground stations that were converted into an air raid shelter during World War II . Construction began in November 1940 and was completed in March 1942. If necessary, up to 7952 people could be accommodated here. After the end of the war, the bunker was used again when several hundred immigrants from Jamaica lived here for a short time in 1948 .
