Balham Railway Station
Balham is a train station in the London Borough of Wandsworth . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 3 on Balham High Road. Below the station is a London Underground station , where trains on the Northern Line stop. In 2013, 6.785 million passengers used the train station and 12.05 million the subway station.
Subway
The underground station opened on September 13, 1926 as part of the extension from Clapham Common to Morden . Designed by Charles Holden , the station is a modernist style building made of Portland stone . The tiles on the platforms and in the access tunnels have largely been preserved in their original condition. The building has been a listed building ( Grade II ) since 1987 . The station has two entrances on both sides of Balham High Road, which are connected by a pedestrian underpass.
On October 14, 1940, during World War II , an aerial bomb fell on the street above the station. The force of the explosion left a nine-meter-deep crater into which a bus fell. The water pipes and sewer pipes burst and flooded the station. According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission , the attack claimed 65 lives and 70 injured. The station and the line between Clapham Common and Tooting Bec could not be put back into operation until January 12, 1941.
The music video for the single Missing by Everything but the Girl shows the two station buildings repeatedly. In the novel Atonement by Ian McEwan and in the film of the same name , the flooding of the station after the air raid is briefly described; however, an incorrect date is given in both.
railroad
The four-track Balham Station is on the Brighton Main Line , the railway line from Victoria to Brighton . The tracks lie on an embankment and the platforms are accessed via an underpass. Southern suburban trains run to Croydon , Epsom , Horsham , London Bridge (via Crystal Palace ) and Sutton .
The station was opened in 1863 by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB & SCR); it replaced a nearby breakpoint built in 1856. At the beginning the station was called Balham and Upper Tooting . In 1923, LB & SCR was transferred to the Southern Railway , which electrified the line running here in the following years. After the privatization of the British railways, the station came under the management of Connex South Central in 1996 , and Southern has been responsible for operations since 2000.
