Clarendon Fund

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Clarendon Fund awards scholarships (English: Clarendon Scholarship ) at the University of Oxford in Great Britain . It was established in 2000 and has supported 140 students each year since 2001 who start postgraduate studies ( Masters or PhD ) at Oxford. In 2014, students from more than 50 countries were funded.

The scholarship is aimed at outstanding applicants starting full or part-time postgraduate studies at Oxford, i.e. H. a master’s degree (M.St., M.Sc., BCL, MFE, M.Phil., M.Th.), a research master (M.Sc.) or a doctorate (D.Phil.). All applicants for the above-mentioned courses are initially considered as potential scholarship holders. The selection is based solely on academic criteria. The financial benefits to the scholarship holders include, in addition to the full coverage of tuition and college fees, a fixed amount to cover living costs. The financial contributions are comparable in amount to the Rhodes scholarship .

As of 2014, a total of 1,300 students were funded by the Clarendon Fund, including 350 active Clarendon scholars.

history

The establishment of the Clarendon Fund was decided in 2000 and carried out in 2001. Funding comes from Oxford University Press, the university publishing house of the University of Oxford. The original purpose of the Clarendon Fund was to support the best post-graduate students from overseas to study at Oxford University. In 2011, the tenth anniversary, it was decided to expand the group of potential candidates to include all nationalities, especially applicants from EU countries.

The Clarendon Fund has already received more than £ 37 million in support from Oxford University Press. In addition to financial support, great importance is attached to promoting the community among the fellows. The scholarship holders have the opportunity to take part in a variety of cultural, social or career-oriented events.

selection

Any applicant for postgraduate studies at Oxford University will automatically be considered for a Clarendon Scholarship. In contrast to other comparable scholarships, such as For example, the Rhodes Scholarship , which focuses on character traits, the scholarship holders are selected solely on the basis of previous academic achievements and the potential to make a significant contribution to their respective research area. In addition, an attempt is made to promote an equal number of scholarship holders from the four divisions of the university in order to enable an interdisciplinary exchange. The scholarship is awarded to approximately 2% of beginning postgraduate students. This makes it one of the most prestigious and competitive scholarships for studying at Oxford University.

Fellowship Council

The Council of Scholarship Holders (English: Clarendon Scholar 'Council ) helps to strengthen the social and intellectual exchange between the scholarship holders by organizing events. The council consists of seven members elected from the scholarship as well as permanent representatives of the university. Another task of the council is to promote the reputation and awareness of the Clarendon Scholarship and the University of Oxford through a strong alumni network as well as through cooperation with other institutions. Past Presidents of the Council include: Claire Higgins (2012), Ramtin Amin (2013), Matthijs Vákár (2014), Robert Brand (2015), Christine Moore (2016), and Amy Kao (2017).
