Clune Park Church

The Clune Park Church is a church building in the Scottish city of Port Glasgow in Inverclyde . In 1979 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B. The building no longer serves church purposes.

description

Clune Park Church is to the west of Port Glasgow at the intersection of Robert Street and Montgomerie Street . Directly to the east is the building of the former Clune Park School , which is also no longer in use. The Clune Park Church was built in 1905. The architects Boston, Menzies & Morton are responsible for the design . The masonry is made of red sandstone . The north-facing front is designed with a wide portal with a roof. In the gable area above there is a large Art Nouveau window . In addition to Art Nouveau elements, motifs from the late Neo-Gothic have also flowed into the planning. On the right rises a relatively low bell tower.

With the merger of the parish with St Andrew's Church in 1996, the building became obsolete and has been unused since then. Only an adjacent meeting room that was torn down in 2006 was used for a few years. Since 1998, Clune Park Church has been listed on the Register of Endangered Landmarks in Scotland. Plant growth and penetrating moisture endanger the substance. Plans to convert the interior into nine residential units failed. Most recently in 2010 the condition of the building was classified as poor and its endangerment as high.
