CodePen is an online community for testing and showing HTML - CSS - and JavaScript - Code that have been created by users. CodePen works as an online code editor and an open source learning environment where developers can create and test snippets of code, also called "pens". The platform is also used in the professional sector by numerous developers. To do this, users use the functions of a dashboard provided by CodePen (similar to Instagram ). Here, the registered users can hide or highlight certain "pens" through the settings. It is also possible to link to social media . If you have bought a subscription, you can also change the background of your dashboard. The platform also includes features for collaborative writing . Among other things, it supports the stylesheet language Sass and the creation of forks of other projects.
In contrast to Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) with a larger range of functions, CodePen is primarily used for spontaneous development and execution of small programs. Typical use cases are the testing of program libraries , the creation of minimal programs to fix bugs and the exchange of code snippets.
CodePen was founded in 2012 by full-stack developers Alex Vazquez, Tim Sabat and front-end designer Chris Coyier. With an estimated 330,000 registered users and 16.9 million visitors per month (as of September 2015), CodePen is one of the largest communities for web designers and developers to present their own programming skills.
