CodePlex was hosting - website of the company Microsoft for open source programs of any kind, you supported team-based work by a. Wiki system and version management based on Team Foundation Server , but could also Subversion , Mercurial or Git be used. There were also discussion forums, bug trackers, the option of tagging projects , RSS support, statistics, etc. Some of the licenses supported were not open source or free software licenses (according to the definitions the FSF and the OSI ).

The first beta version went online in May 2006, the official final version appeared a month later. As of December 21, 2008 a total of 7,058 projects had been registered.

Although Codeplex comprised a wide range of projects, the majority focused on the topics of the .NET Framework , which in particular included ASP.NET and SharePoint . The AJAX Control Toolkit is one of the best known and most widespread projects that have arisen in CodePlex, which is the result of a joint development between Microsoft and the community.

Codeplex was completely discontinued on December 15, 2017.
