Cold standby

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cold standby is the name given to the behavior of redundant components ( replacement server ) in an IT system.

In the event of a component failure, the replacement component is not automatically activated as in hot standby , but is started or put into operation manually by a system administrator . This practice results in inevitable system downtime.

Obviously, such a cold standby system is not set up for applications that have to be constantly available, but they are more cost-effective.
