The Commander Air Group ( CAG ) is the officer in charge and commander of the carrier squadron on board aircraft carriers and their carrier combat group in the US Navy . The name originated in 1938 when the first Carrier Air Group was formed. These air groups were renamed Carrier Air Wings on December 20, 1963, with the commander retaining the title of CAG .

The post of the CAG usually requires the rank of Captain (OF-5). The staff of the CAG is usually supplemented with staff from the individual squadrons, such as the intelligence officer. As a rule, the CAG is subordinate to a rear admiral in the function of the carrier group commander ( Commander, Carrier Strike Group or Commander, Cruiser Destroyer Group ).

The personal aircraft of the CAG ( CAG Bird ) can always be recognized by the fact that it carries a number of the carrier squadron ending in 00. It usually also has particularly colorful markings.

On aircraft carriers of the Royal Navy , the equivalent is the Commander (Air) .
