The Commercial National Bank in Washington, DC is a downtown historic skyscraper that was the headquarters of the bank of the same name until 1933. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 11, 1991 .
The American architect Waddy Butler Wood (1869–1944) designed the new headquarters of the bank, founded in 1904, in 1917. This was one of the four largest banks in the city in the 1920s. The building also housed Western Union offices . The building is an early example of the evolution of American high-rise architecture towards a simplistic classicism . In particular, the cornice on the exterior refers to the architectural history; Inside, high columns dominate the three-story room in the counter hall. The facade is divided into three parts with a flattened entrance area, a central section clad with unadorned limestone slabs and an elaborately designed upper end.
