Commerson crater

The Commerson Crater is a caldera in the mountains of Réunion , a French overseas department. It is located in the municipality of Saint-Joseph and is part of the Piton de la Fournaise , a shield volcano at the eastern end of the island, but outside the Enclos Fouqué , the youngest caldera of the volcano.

The caldera was named after Philibert Commerson , a French explorer.

climate

Due to its elevated position, the Commerson Crater receives significant amounts of rain , especially during tropical storms . During Cyclone Hyacinthe in January 1980 it received 6,433 millimeters of precipitation in 15 days, the largest amount of precipitation caused by a tropical cyclone in a single location. The second largest amount of rainfall during a single tropical cyclone also occurred at Commerson Crater, when Cyclone Gamede dropped 5,512 millimeters of rain over the area in 2007.
