The Compañía de Tranvías de Mérida (German: Tram Company Mérida ) was a tram company in the Mexican city of Mérida , which operated a network with a gauge of 914 millimeters.

history

The first trams in Mérida ran on September 15, 1880. The initially horse-drawn carriages were acquired by the John Stephenson Co. of New York City . On June 18, 1891, the new operating company Compañía de Tranvías de Mérida was founded, which expanded the network. In 1893 it was 25.4 kilometers long, in 1895 it was already 30.5 kilometers. In 1902, John Stephenson Co. again delivered steam trams to Mérida. The further expansion of the network was as follows:

  • 1900: 34 kilometers
  • 1905: 40 kilometers
  • 1906: 46 kilometers
  • 1907: 50 kilometers and 150 cars

On December 15, 1917, the company ordered two battery-powered trams, one closed and the other open . From 1919 trams ran with petrol engines. At the end of 1920, the network was 53 kilometers long before it was shut down in the 1930s.
