Con Kolivas is an Australian anesthetist . He is known among Linux users for his previous work on the Linux kernel .

life and work

Until 2007, in addition to his work as a doctor, he maintained his own kernel patch set in his spare time, which in particular contained the staircase deadline scheduler he had developed . It should improve performance on desktop systems. He offered this patch set on a separate page. In addition, he also developed his own benchmark program called ConTest in order to be able to compare the speed of different Linux kernels.

Originally, he did not want to include his work in the official Linux kernel, but was then persuaded by some kernel developers and many requests from end users to do so. So he began to bring his patches into the official kernel. This sometimes very time-consuming work, however, took away the fun of developing his patches. In 2007 he finally announced his withdrawal from kernel development in an email and explained his reasons in an interview. In particular, he complained about the great difficulty in integrating his patches into the official kernel branch. And in the meantime Ingo Molnár had developed his own implementation of a new scheduler with the Completely Fair Scheduler , which quickly found its way into the Linux branch. Kolivas finished his work with the last patch set for kernel 2.6.22.

On August 31, 2009, Kolivas released the new Brain Fuck Scheduler for the Linux kernel. This scheduler is also primarily intended for desktop use and is intended to scale better , especially with two- and four-core processors . The name is deliberately chosen provocatively, as he writes in the accompanying FAQs.

Kolivas is married to Despina Kolivas and lives in Melbourne .
