history
In the second half of the 19th century, many people moved from the countryside to fast-growing, urban workers' quarters to work in the factories. If a worker fell ill, he was no longer paid. Whole families became impoverished. For this reason, numerous denominational auxiliary and company health insurance funds were set up which paid compensation to workers in the event of illness. The Concordia emerged in 1913 from the health insurance association of the Swiss Catholic People's Association, which united such funds. With the introduction of the Health and Accident Insurance Act (KUVG), it started business in 1914. Concordia has grown continuously since its inception. Today, with 774,000 insured persons, it is one of the largest health insurers in Switzerland. It is the market leader in the Principality of Liechtenstein. In 2007 the association was transformed into an AG.
