The Conqueror (FV214) was a heavy British battle tanks of the time of the Cold War .
description
The first prototype was presented in 1948. Developed as a counterpart to the Soviet IS-3 heavy tank , the Conqueror was equipped with a US 120 mm cannon. The ammunition charge and projectile had to be loaded separately due to the limited space in the tower.
A total of 200 Conquerors were delivered to the British Army . You served in the British Army of the Rhine in West Germany from 1955 to 1966 . Each regiment had a maximum of nine Conquerors to support the Centurion tanks .
weaknesses
The Conqueror's weaknesses quickly became apparent, which were mainly due to the strong armor , which was 178 mm thick on the front, and the resulting excess weight. The large turret also contributed to this problem, although its size was necessary to carry the 120 mm cannon. Due to its heavy weight of over 60 tons, the Conqueror was very slow. In addition, since many German river bridges could not carry this load, its operating range was severely limited. Apart from the firepower, it had no advantages over the Centurion , so that the last Conqueror were retired in 1966.
