Conseil constitutionnel (Lebanon)

The Conseil constitutionnel du Liban ( German  Constitutional Council of Lebanon ; Arabic المجلس الدستوري, DMG al-Maǧlis ad-dustūrī ) is a Lebanese political institution.

history

Its creation goes back to the Taif Agreement , signed in 1989. It was established by the reform of Article 19 of the Lebanese Constitution : by law number 250 of July 14, 1993, conformed by a constitutional provision of September 21, 1990. Inspired by the Conseil constitutionnel of France , it has as a political role the constitutionality of To control laws by the Lebanese National Assembly and to ensure respect for the integrity of the institutions, especially the separation of powers .

She is a member of the Association of Constitutional Courts which use French as their working language .

The Constitutional Council is independent of the judiciary and differs from a supreme court, which in turn forms part of the legal hierarchy.

composition

The Constitutional Council consists of ten members, five elected by the Lebanese National Assembly and five appointed by the Lebanese Council of Ministers. One of them is the President of the Constitutional Council, one the Vice-President and one a Secretary. At the same time these must be five Muslims and five Christians.
