Contenido is a free web content management system . The open source project was initiated by four for business AG in 2000 and is being further developed by four for business AG and other programmers from the Contenido community. The PHP and MySQL based software is under the GNU General Public License . Support is provided by the user community (forum, FAQ , wiki), and free developers can also be found in the forum.

service

Contenido is controlled on a web server with a web browser . No additional software is required from the editor for operation. The administration (the so-called backend ) is the part of Contenido visible in the web browser, in which content is created and edited. An editor allows users without HTML knowledge to do editorial work.

functionality

The principle

Contenido separates layout, functionality and content. The system organizes all articles in a tree structure (also called a category tree). The editor assigns a template to either the category or the article and can edit the content if this has been provided for in the modules. The extensive rights management of Contenido enables a large selection of authorization levels. Thanks to the multi-client data capability, different pages can be maintained and managed independently of one another via one installation. Depending on the client, any number of duplicates of the page in other languages can be created and content can be synchronized, translated and published.

One of the great advantages of Contenido is the flexible expandability through modules and plugins. Modules cover more the expansion of the front end, plugins are mostly used to expand the back end functionality.

Modules

Modules are the first choice in Contenido to expand the system with functions and features. Many modules for setting up a website are already included in the demo client (article teaser, navigation, login, etc.). Modules are divided into an input and an output part, whereby the input is responsible for the configuration of the module, and the output provides the data processing and the display for the front end. With the possible use of PHP, MySQL, JavaScript and / or pure (X) HTML, (almost) all ideas and wishes can be implemented. Many additional modules can be found in the module area of the forum (guest book, appointment list, upload and download module, extended article lists, etc.).

CMS types supplied by Contenido complete the range in the module area. CMS types are small widgets which often use functions such as B. make article teasers or download lists available in a simple manner.

Detailed information on modules for Contenido can be found in the Contenido Wiki.

Plugins

Plugins can functionally expand both the backend and Contenido itself. They are often used in combination with front-end modules or the Contenido Extensions Chain. Contenido itself provides permanently installed plugins such as a WorkFlow, Linkchecker or Content Allocation plugin. The newsletter system that can be selected during installation can no longer be referred to as a plugin due to its overly strong integration into the core.

Detailed information on plugins for Contenido can be found in the Contenido Wiki

Contenido Extensions Chain (CEC)

The Contenido Extension Chain, or CEC for short, is an interface provided by Contenido to expand the core functions of Contenido both in the backend and in the frontend. Defined entry points are integrated in the Contenido Core, which give the developer access to data currently being processed there and (limited) to the display in the backend. For example, the workflow plug-in makes extensive use of the CEC in the article area.

Others

Barrier-free websites can be created with Contenido.

development

The main development is done by 4fb and selected developers from the community, with 4fb taking over the project management and providing the developers with the necessary resources such as bug trackers or SVN. In the future, according to a statement from 4fb at Communido 2010, an even closer cooperation with and more say of the community is planned.

The current version branch 4.9 was started on August 13, 2013. The previously stable version 4.8 was supported with irregular updates until December 31, 2015 due to its high distribution. Support for the outdated version 4.6, which can still run under PHP 4, was discontinued at the end of October 2010.

Modifications are possible at any time, extensions and changes are mainly carried out by the company.

criticism

Over the years there have been repeated voices that the community will not be actively involved in further development. In addition, it is criticized within the community that there is no public roadmap for further development and that four for business does not provide any information about the work on the CMS.
