A continuous ink system (CIS), and continuous ink supply system called (CISS), is a low cost replacement for cartridges of ink jet printers . In contrast to conventional cartridges, the CIS uses very large (around 100 ml / color) ink tanks that are connected to the printhead via tubes . The containers can be filled easily, no syringes are required.

The ink printer industry sees the Continuous Ink System as a threat to ink cartridge sales, while high volume users are demanding lower ink costs. The result is a head-to-head race - manufacturers change ink compositions, chips, and cartridge models so frequently that CIS manufacturers struggle to keep up.

In order to avoid having to reset the chips of the cartridges with every refill, the manufacturers have used their own chips that automatically reset their fill level. Printer driver can use this chips have third-party problems sometimes are workarounds required.

A great advantage of the CIS technology is not only the cost savings, but also the possibility of using special inks.
