Convective Available Potential Energy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Convective Available Potential Energy ( CAPE ) is a measure of the energy available for convection (vertical air mass movement) . It is directly related to the speed of the vertical air mass movement. Higher values correspond to a higher risk of severe storms . During (or before) strong thunderstorms , values of more than 1000 to over 5000 J / kg ( joules per kilogram ) are observed.
