Corliss Orville Burandt
Corliss Orville Burandt was an American inventor of the automatic camshaft adjustment .
While working on a 1965 Chevrolet Corvair , he installed a sensor in the cylinder to optimize the fuel-air mixture during combustion.
He transferred the patent rights to Investment Rarities , a venture capital firm specializing in gold trading. When these suffered financial setbacks in the 1980s, they no longer paid the fees for maintaining Burandt's patent, making the invention public domain .
