Cornelia Metella

Cornelia Metella was a member of the Roman upper class in the 1st century BC. And the daughter of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio , who was adopted by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius .

Her real name would actually be Caecilia Metella , but since her father came from the patrician gens Cornelia , she was called Cornelia Metella.

Plutarch describes her as a beautiful woman with a friendly character, well-read and experienced in playing the lyre, who was also well trained, for example in geometry and philosophy.

Cornelia was first married to Publius Licinius Crassus , the son of the triumvir Marcus Licinius Crassus . After the death of her husband on his father's campaign against the Parthians , she was born in 52 BC. The fifth wife of Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus .

After her husband's defeat in the Battle of Pharsalus , she traveled with her stepson Sextus Pompeius to Mytilene , where they met her husband in order to flee to Egypt together . Upon arrival in Egypt, Pompey was murdered in front of his wife. Gaius Julius Caesar , who arrived shortly afterwards in Egypt, punished the murderers and gave Cornelia her husband's ashes and his signet ring. Cornelia returned to Rome and buried Pompey on his estate in the Alban Hills.
