Cosmid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As cosmids is called plasmids , called cos -sites ( cohesive site) included. It is to DNA - sequences derived from the λ phage- derived. These sections lie at the ends of the linear phage chromosome and are each of an identical sequence, but point towards one another ( inverted repeat ). The DNA can form a ring via this (circularize) and is therefore not broken down in the host cell.

Cosmids are packaged in phage structures made of proteins, and so the foreign genes can be transduced (smuggled) into bacteria . Do the cosmids contain e.g. B. genes for antibiotic resistance , the transduced bacteria are enabled to survive and multiply in a culture solution despite the addition of the respective antibiotic . Cosmids are used to create gene libraries for a genome.
