Craufurdland Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Craufurdland Castle is a manor house near the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in the East Ayrshire council area . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

Craufurdland Castle is the ancestral home of the Crawfords of Craufurdland . The oldest parts of the building probably date from the 15th, but at the latest from the early 16th century. A wing was added during the 17th century. Around this time, parts of the interior were also revised, as can be seen from the date 1648 on the stucco work. Craufurdland Castle received its current appearance between 1830 and 1840 when additional parts of the building were added and the architecture was revised in the neo-Gothic style.

description

The building is isolated on a spacious plot of land around three kilometers northeast of the center of Kilmarnock. A three-story tower with a cantilevered parapet walkway with machicolations and corner tours in the west wing probably dates from the 15th century and represents the core of the manor house. Inside there is a large hall with cross vaults . A leaded glass window with heraldic symbols is set above a door . The two-story, east-facing King's Wing dates from the 17th century and is decorated in the interior with richly ornamented stucco ceilings and wood paneling. The quarry stone masonry is partially plastered with Harl and the gable surfaces are worked as a stepped gable .
