Cristo benedicente ("Blessing Christ") or Redentore benedicente ("Blessing Redeemer") is a painting by Raphael that was created around 1506. It was painted with oil paints on oak wood in the format H 31.7 × W 25.3 cm.

description

The subject of the picture is Jesus Christ as the risen one with the crown of thorns and the wounds of the crucifixion . He wears a purple robe that only covers his right shoulder and the abdomen below the pelvis . With his head bowed, he looks at the viewer seriously and concentrated. The hair is shoulder length, the beard is short and transparent. The legs are to be thought of in contraposto . Similar to the Salvator Mundi type, the right hand performs the gesture of blessing . The background is a hilly landscape with a cloudless sky blue that deepens upwards.

Provenance

The image of Christ was sold to Tosio de Brescia by the Pesaro family in 1821. In 1851 he transferred it to the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo in Brescia, and it has been on permanent exhibition there ever since.
