In 2019 the CrossFit Games were held for the thirteenth time. In addition to 396 male and female "individuals", teams, masters and teenagers also compete against each other.

qualification

In principle, anyone can qualify for the CrossFit Games. Until 2018 you had to go through both "The Open" and the Regionals to participate. In 2019, the qualification conditions were changed, since then the best athletes and the best teams from the participating countries (162 in total) and the best 20 female and male athletes of the "CrossFit Open" have qualified. You can also qualify through the so-called "Sanctionals" (competitions that are independently organized by CrossFit but are licensed and take place in 16 locations around the world).

The Open

The Open are open to everyone. For a low fee, you can register on the CrossFit Games website and participate. The director of the CrossFit Games, Dave Castro, announced five different training sessions over the course of five weeks. According to the announcement, each athlete has five days to complete this training session. Since every training unit is measured, certain standards must be adhered to. To ensure that these are observed, this must be judged either by a referee or by video. In order to be approved as an official referee or “judge”, an online course must be completed and passed prior to “The Open”. With the workouts, as usual in CrossFit, it is usually important to complete as many repetitions of an exercise as possible, or to get a certain training unit over with as quickly as possible.

At the Open you are assigned to the country in which you currently live or are registered as an athlete in an official CrossFit box.

The Regionals

The Regionals were the last qualification stage before the CrossFit Games. They lasted three days and entitle the best athletes to participate in the games. In Europe, the United States of America and Australia it was the three best-placed women and men, in Canada East and Canada West the two best, and in Africa, Asia and Latin America (Central and South America) the best athlete who attended the Games to lead. The Regionals took place in the same place for all athletes in the region. In Europe the venue changed annually, in 2016 and 2017 the Regionals took place in Madrid. In 2018 the venue was in Berlin.

The CrossFit Games

At the CrossFit Games, the 394 best athletes (197 women and 197 men), the best 14 teams, and the best 120 athletes from the Masters and 40 from the Teens Divisions compete. In 2016 there were 15 workouts to complete within 5 days for the first time. The games usually start on Wednesday and end in the final on Sunday evening. The winners will receive $ 275,000 in prize money. A total of $ 1,750,000 in prize money will be distributed.
