Crossmolina ( Irish Crois Uí Mhaoilíona , older also Crois Uí Mhaoilfhiona , "Cross of Ó Maoilfhíona") is located on the N59 , west of Ballina , near Lough Conn , on both sides of the River Deel, in the northeast of County Mayo in the west of the Republic Ireland . The name goes back to a cross that was erected for a member of the Fiachrach clan. There is a view of the landscape from Nephin Mountain. At the 2016 census, the place had 1044 inhabitants.

It is said from the early history of the area that the kings of Hy-Fiachrach entertained at Inniscoe and on Annagh Island in Lough Conn Raths . Crossmolina is a settlement that arose around the Crossmolina Abbey, founded around 1300 AD by the DeBarry family. In 1526, O'Donnell von Tirconnell destroyed the place. From 1570 Richard de Burke , the owner of Crossmolina, was involved in the uprising against the English government. The English triumphed at the "windy gap" in 1586 and brought the prisoners to one of the islands in Lough Conn.
