Cry of the Kalahari ( Call of the Kalahari ) is the travelogue published in 1984 by the American couple Delia and Mark Owens.

The report describes autobiographically the experiences of the two zoology students on their seven-year research trip to the central Kalahari , Botswana, in the mid-1970s. Under simple conditions they spent most of the time in the region of the Decetion valley in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve . One focus of her work was the study of brown hyenas and other predators . The "Call of the Kalahari" describes the communication sounds of the black-backed jackals .

The book became an international bestseller and in 1985 received the John Burroughs Medal for the best natural history book of the year. The Owens continued their work in Zambia , among other places , and the book published on this topic is entitled "The eye of the elephant".
