Crystallography Open Database

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Crystallography Open Database ( COD , "open crystallographic database") is a free access database founded in February 2003, in which crystal structures from scientific publications are recorded. In addition, it is also possible for scientists to enter as yet unpublished crystal structures in the database.

The COD is an open access initiative. The aim of the project is to bundle all available crystal structures of organic , inorganic and organometallic compounds, which have been cataloged in various fee-based databases, in a single open database. An appeal to the operators of the chargeable databases to make versions with reduced functionality available to the general public free of charge had previously failed. The COD does not contain any structural data on proteins and nucleic acids , as these can be accessed in the Protein Data Bank, which is also freely accessible .
