Cubbies (sport)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cubbies (also called "Cuppies" ) is a game from England that is now played in parts of Great Britain and Sweden .

The game needs a soccer ball (usually according to the FIFA standard) and a goal. A teammate must declare himself ready to be the goalkeeper and try to keep the balls. Everyone is played against everyone, with the field players forming pairs (wembely pairs) in a popular variant.

The game is played in rounds, with each pair having to score a certain number of goals in each round in order to advance to the next round. In each round, the pair that was the last to fail to achieve the required number of goals while the other pairs did so is eliminated. Rounds are played until only one pair remains and all others are eliminated.

The game is popular as a training variant in the popular sport of English football. Compared to the original soccer ball, it is more physically demanding and promotes dribbling and ball holding skills.

In England it is also popular among school children as it does not require or limit the number of players. Cubbie's tournaments were never played, plans in Liverpool were halted as no precise rules could be drawn up for the otherwise quite anarchic game.
