In 2007, Cutwail was considered the leading spam botnet with 1.6 million infected computers using Microsoft Windows as their operating system. According to research by IT security expert Brian Krebs, the leading developer of Cutwail is active under the code name “Google”. He used the SpamIt platform to rent Cutwail to interested customers who could then use the botnet to spread spam for their own purposes.
