Standard Catalog of World Paper Money

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Standard Catalog of World Paper Money is Albert Pick's most important work . It was first published in 1975 and is the most sustainable attempt to date to capture the world's banknotes. The basis of the work was the author's world banknotes collection , which today is the basis of the HVB Foundation banknote collection . It is therefore the basis for the pick number .

When the number of banknotes to be recorded and recorded gradually became too large, the catalog was divided into a total of 3 volumes today:

  • Standard Catalog of World Paper Money - Volume I - Specialized Issues - Essentially all regional editions can be found here.
  • Standard Catalog of World Paper Money - Volume II - General Issues 1368 - 1960 - Here you can find all banknotes that were issued before 1961.
  • Standard Catalog of World Paper Money - Volume III - Modern Issues 1961 - Present - Here you can find all banknotes that were issued after 1960.

For most collectors, beginners and advanced, the III. Volume the most important of the series, always in its current edition.

Prefix code

The pick number is usually preceded by a P. A collector can use the expression "German Reich P 3" to determine which note it is.

There are also other issues:

  • PS - banknote from the "Specialized Issues", e.g. B. Local banks
  • PM - If there is a PM in front of the note, it is a military issue, i.e. a bank note that can usually only be found in military editions
  • PR - regional editions
  • CS - "Collectors Series" are banknotes that are canceled by the central banks and given to collectors, for example to procure foreign currency.

criticism

The first editions of the work were enthusiastically received by the then still relatively small community of paper money collectors, but today the superficial treatment of the entire work is criticized more and more. Errors that are reported are rarely corrected, the allocation of new numbers is often superficial and hardly comprehensible.
