HVB Foundation Banknote Collection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The HVB Stiftung Geldscheinsammlung is a public foundation under civil law. The aim of the foundation is to maintain one of the world's most important collections in the field of banknotes, to evaluate it scientifically and to make it publicly accessible.

The foundation emerged from Albert Pick's private collection . In 1964, Pick brought the collection, which at that time already contained over 180,000 banknotes, to the Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel-Bank . The further expansion of the collection was also supported by Siegfried Otto . In November 2003 the collection was transferred to a foundation by Bayerische Hypo- und Vereinsbank AG . Franziska Jungmann-Stadler and Ludwig Devrient serve as board members. Today the collection owns more than 300,000 banknotes and contains paper money from all countries and eras. The oldest notes come from China in the 14th century. In December 2013, the foundation was given a collection of around 8,000 copies of Württemberg banknotes from the Deutsche Pfandbriefbank on permanent loan.

The collection is housed in the premises of the Giesecke & Devrient company .

In 2010, the banknote collection was classified as a nationally valuable cultural asset in the Applied Art property type on the basis of the Cultural Property Protection Act. There is a collaboration with the Staatliche Münzsammlung München , where special exhibitions from the Foundation's holdings have already been shown several times.

There is no permanent exhibition, so parts of the collection are shown at traveling exhibitions.

Since 2017, parts of the collection have been digitized with the support of bavarikon and presented in the portal.
