Dowel iron for smooth dowels

The dowel iron is a device for the manual production of wooden dowels .

The dowel iron consists of a hardened piece of flat steel with round holes in the common dowel sizes. The holes have sharp edges with smooth or corrugated edges. For the production of the dowels, wooden blanks of the appropriate size are driven through the holes and are given their exact diameter and outer shape.

Dowel irons were common in woodworking handicraft businesses, as long as dowels were mainly made in-house and not bought in as a finished product. For this, the dowel iron was firmly attached to wooden blocks. In the 21st century, they are used in special cases such as the production of dowels from high-quality woods.
