Dōtanuki

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Dōtanuki ( Japanese 同 田 貫 ) designates both a sword forge at the place of the same name (now part of Kikuchi ) in the former province of Higo and the characteristic sword style of the forge.

According to legend, it was possible to cut through a warrior's armor with the sword. Allegedly the only sword with which one could split a samurai and its armor in "two halves". Newly made Dōtanuki are used today as a decorative object or training sword. Conventional Japanese sword blades weigh around 700–900 g. Exercises with a dōtanuki are often more strenuous, as this sword usually weighs over 1000 g.
